Nanyangshan GS Hydro
Project Details
Project Name: Nanyangshan 1.26MW Hydro Power Project
Project Technology: Run-of-river micro-hydro
Location: Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, China
Social Development
Local Economy
Linxia prefecture is one of the poorest areas in China. The residents, many from the Muslim Hui minority, earn average annual incomes of under RMB 2000 (USD292). The project will generate the economic, social and environmental benefits in the region.
Local Employment
Permanent employment opportunities for local residents have been created during the operation phase. Permanent employees receive a salary of 650 RMB/month, much higher than the average 195 RMB/month income in Gansu’s rural areas.
Infrastructure
A 1km road was constructed for this project. This road replaced an old track that was often unusable during winter and rainy seasons. The new road provides stable access to several small villages all year long.
Local Environment
No relocations: No residents were relocated during the construction of this project. Agricultural areas incurred minimal flooding.
No impact on river flow: Run-of-river hydro technology means there is minimal impact on the river’s natural flow.
Protection of local forests: Because of this and other clean energy projects, the price of electricity in the area has fallen by 75%, making electricity accessible to even the poorest residents. In addition, residents no longer rely on wood and coal briquettes for heating and cooking, meaning a fall in respiratory diseases. Because the project supplies affordable electricity, residents no longer rely on firewood for heating and cooking; thus, it is estimated that 198,212m3 of forest will be saved over the 7 year crediting period.
